When I was a little kid and an adult would ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I would always say with a lot of excitement, a scientist! Even before I knew what real scientists did, what I saw on television and learned in school was enough for me. This was my ideal profession throughout grade school. As I got older, that dream of becoming a scientist changed a little bit. Okay, it changed in more ways than one at a frequent pace. I wanted to become a professional motor-cross racer and professional paintball player throughout middle school and in high school I spent most of my time under the hoods of cars in hopes of running my own garage as a master mechanic. None of those dreams ever became reality until this point in my life. Right now, I’m in a good position to graduate with a degree in Natural Resource Management, a degree that can help me become a marine biologist in hopes of helping the world’s fisheries population. This is why I believe that it’s never too late to accomplish your goals.
After graduating from high school in 2010, I ended up enrolling at the Northern Marianas College that fall. I decided to major in elementary education because it was the only bachelor’s degree program at that time and my mom was a part of the School of Education staff. The first few weeks of school were alright, but the freedom that college had to offer was a danger zone for students like me at that time. I started skipping class regularly to hang out with friends and in all honesty all we did was waste time. I ended up completely failing my first semester’s worth of classes and my family wasn’t too happy with me. I then realized that my heart was just not into the education profession. I needed to set off and find a way to become successful at something I was passionate about so the following year, I moved to Oregon and went to school for mechanics. I loved every second of it. The freedom that college offered me was working in my favor this time, because I spent most of my free time in the one of the school’s garages getting work done. I did this for almost four years and honestly, I burnt myself out. I ended up being tired and grumpy all the time. I noticed that if I kept this up, the profession I’m about to have wouldn’t make me happy in the future. After weeks of consulting with my family and friends, I moved back to Saipan to get my head together.
When I first got back, my life consisted of playing basketball on week days at the NMC gym, jiu-jitsu 3 nights a week and men’s league soccer on Sundays just to keep me busy. After a few months of bumming it out, my mom told me about the NRM program at NMC, which I was skeptical about at first, but I gave it a shot. I decided that I was going to take my time with traditional college. I had grown up since the last time I tried to get a degree. I was exposed to the fields of marine biology and immediately got hooked. Now, a year and a half later, I’m on my way to a becoming a scientist, just what I wanted to be growing up. This is why I believe it’s never too late to accomplish your goals, no matter how old you or they are.

Why is this my favorite?
This is my I believe speech. This speech was my favorite, because I got to think about what I really believe in and what has molded my life to what it is today. I loved giving it because it inspires hope for anyone who is unsure of themselves or their future. I love sharing messages like that and helping to improve myself and my community.

Speech class reflection:
When I first signed up for this class, I was always nervous about talking in front of people. I could never get my mind straight and my thoughts were never in order. After learning how to make a proper outline, My thoughts were finally starting to make sense and when I can think straight, talking in front of people got a lot easier. I stopped feeling so nervous when I realized that I can get my point across properly. The thing I still really need to improve on is practice and being prepared. I always find myself cramming for speeches and never fully memorizing them or giving them the way I would've liked. I feel like time management and self control is something I must continue to work on and will continue to work on in the future.
