REFLECTION
Initially, I was really interested in my own topic since America has been going through those intense shootings in schools, malls-- wherever… and the fact that the President had the audacity to blame video games for those tragic events felt very absurd to me. It felt perfect, the topic covered psychology and video games-- two topics that I was very interested in. However, as I delved deeper into the topic, I found that I was losing interest quickly-- as resources were difficult to find and answering “why people shoot people” was something that could not be answered easily. While I am alright with what I have so far, I think that I would choose to do something a little easier next time.
Despite how difficult my topic was, the way the course structured it’s assignments made things a little easier. Being able to breakdown the final paper into multiple different essays made everything simple for me. I definitely enjoy this method compared to straight up writing everything in the last three to four weeks of the course. The same goes for the literature sources, finding them throughout the course made things easier for me as I was able to not get frustrated at the last few weeks trying to find scholarly articles that might not even be helpful. In the end, everything worked out and I definitely prefer finding things over the course of the course instead of getting everything at once.
I personally did not find myself using the textbook at all, nor did I find myself using the sources provided by the instructor. I did a lot of things independently with assistance from emailing the instructor as well as classmates.
In terms of writing the other essays over the course of the essay, as mentioned earlier, I truly think that I did well. I cited in APA correctly and didn’t have many grammatical errors in the end-- which is very good. Despite this, the practice was useful. Especially for writing the illustrative essays, which most likely will pop up a few more times in the future. As I am working towards becoming an educator, I believe that being able to introduce subjects is going to become crucial-- and that is exactly what an illustrative essay is.
One of the skills that I learned over the course of the semester is the ability to do proper research-- finding the right information. This was definitely something that I initially struggled with, as stated in the beginning where I was mentioning that I didn’t enjoy trying to find my sources. But the fact that I learned to find information and research more efficiently will prove very useful in my future classes and career. As a counselor, I will probably have to research further into psychology and stuff to understand why teens might do certain things, and understanding those things will allow me to give them the advice they need… which is good. I also got way better at citing APA, as I used to make mistakes before but now I can do it almost naturally. That will prove very useful in my future classes.
Contrasting that, the things that I believe I was already good with was writing. I didn’t find myself having trouble with putting words onto the paper and my diction was fairly accurate as well, which is good. I don’t think that I improved that much, but every point counts-- I think. I definitely might have to work on putting everything in the same tense as well as find better words for specific meanings-- just to make things more accurate.
In the end, I believe that everything worked out. I managed to finish every essay and turn them in on time. I definitely will look upon this class with fondness, as I recall the information that I’ve learned while doing all the essays for this class. I am satisfied with my research topic and don’t regret choosing it. I learned some new skills and strengthened existing ones, as well as made an effort to fix mistakes that I could have made. In conclusion, this class will definitely stick to my head as something that helped me take another step in improving not only my writing, but my ability to research topics.
