Introduction
Reflection
This video is my first published attempt at speaking in front of a camera. Overall I feel that I admit that I was rather nervous because I felt that I could not come up with a good speech. I still feel that I could have come up with better content for my introduction speech as I simply rambled about stuff that I could think about. I should keep in mind that I need to come up with a better conclusion for my next speech, as the conclusion for my introduction was rather lackluster. I also noticed that I paused for a moment or two during the video. I might have looked away from the camera a few times during the video. I personally feel that I should improve the sound of my voice in future speeches. Overall this video tells me that I have much to improve in my speech.
My goals in this class for the fall are:
My goals in this class for the fall are:
- To create better content for my speeches. Hopefully this will prevent me from rambling about whatever comes to mind.
- To make my voice SOUND better when I give speeches. Being loud and sounding good are two different things for me.
- I want to pause less when I give a speech.
- To make appropriate and fitting gestures during my speech that would make my speech interesting.
Reflection II
Looking back on my time in this speech class, I have to say that the class was really interesting, at times challenging, and fun. Even if there were times that I was nervous in going up to speak, I actually liked getting the chance to go up to the “podium” to speak out. Every gets nervous, in fact it is natural for people to get nervous before making an important speech. But nervousness can be controlled, and remembering this helped me a lot in my speeches. Speech class was really great for me and I learned a lot about public speaking.
My goals for this class were to create better content for my speeches, to make my voice sound better when I give speeches, to pause less when I give a speech, and make appropriate and fitting gestures during my speech that would make my speech interesting. So far, I believe I have accomplished some of my goals during this class. However, I think I could use more improvement in some of these areas.
The goals that I have achieved so far are: making my voice sound better, pausing less when I give a speech, and creating better content for my speech. I believe I sound better in my other speeches because I sounded more confident in my other speeches than I did on my introduction speech. That is an improvement to me, as it makes me feel more confident. Another goal that I have achieved is pausing less during a speech. Now, I tend to pause during more appropriate times and I can continue talking even if I feel stuck, which is an improvement for me. Most importantly, I have made better content for my other speeches because I learned to focus on a clear topic instead. This prevented me from rambling about whatever comes to my mind most of the time. Overall, I am satisfied with the improvements I have made.
The goal that I still have a long way to go before achieving is making appropriate hand gestures during my speech. Making hand gestures have been a problem for me whenever I go up and speak. This can make my speeches quite boring. While I have been working to improve on this, I feel that I haven’t really been doing this enough during my speeches. I tend to forget about hand gestures during my speech as I am often focused on the content of my speech. In order to improve on this, I must practice more hand gestures before I make a speech and have another person watch for my gestures when I get feedback. Practicing my speech in front of a mirror may also help me improve on my hand gestures for future speeches.
Overall, I have accomplished most of the goals I have set for this class. I still need to improve on my gestures before I feel that I have sufficiently reached my goal. However, with more practice, preparation, and dedication I will be able to improve on my hand gestures in future speeches.
