Reflection
The topic I chose was the effectiveness of Achieve3000 in the 8th grade within the CNMI. It was a good topic, however, I would not work on it any further because at the beginning of class when we were choosing our topics I chose this one because it related more with my career choice at the time. Education. However, I recently changed my career path focusing more on business so I feel that the topic no longer interests me as it did in the beginning. I am happy with what I selected since the topic was abundant with data, the only problem is that I found that during my research it was difficult to organize all the data and find a pattern.
I prefer the method that I used during this class because I was able to get feedback for my essays which helped me improve them and make the changes I need, this helped improve my writing and analytical skills. I also found that writing an essay for each section and then putting it together, in the end, was way easier than writing out one whole big essay at the final weeks of the course because you won’t forget all the lessons that were taught during the course. Once a new lesson was taught you immediately get the chance to practice on it instead of coming up with the material at the last minute.
I found it very helpful that we were given time during the course to find the literature for or topics. Not only were we able to ask our teacher if the literature we found is acceptable for our topic but if we want to change the literature we have or find more we were given the chance to. I am satisfied with the sources I found, however, I couldn’t find any source locally regarding Achieve3000 so I had to look for more sources to make up for that gap. Luckily, there were a plethora of sources regarding Achieve3000 online and many of them were very resourceful and helpful. The most helpful sources were the sources that had a lot of statistics and graphs that helped back up the information within the sources. This made it easier for me to gather data and compare it to the data I had to gather from scratch as I interviewed experts on the topic.
All the material given to us throughout the course was very helpful. The most helpful material, in my opinion, was the textbook because not only did it make it easier for us students to understand, the book also provided us tips and advice which helped us as we continued to work on our research paper. The most helpful academic writing sources were APA formatting, grammar corrections, and analysis activities. These sources helped me improve my writing and analytical skills.
I think I achieved everything that was taught during the course. I was able to complete the majority of the work that was provided to us and I am confident that I can use these newly developed skills to write essays in the future however I would still need to continue practicing these skills as to not lose them. I think the types of writing that would be required in other classes or my future career would be analytical, informative, persuasive, and process writing.
I am positive that I can use these skills that I learned during the course to find information and literature sources for support. I will be able to write academic essays in at least three different genres because of the types of writings we were able to learn during class. The writing skill that I feel is stronger would be informative and persuasive. Informative because it provides information about a topic and persuasive because once you know what side you are on, it becomes easy to persuade someone about the side you have chosen. I feel that I learned enough about APA and that I am confident that I can apply it in future classes and look it up if needed.
I think this is a skill that I will use in the future because I am going to major in business management. In business, you have to analyze information to improve your business such as coming up with a financial plan, come up with a market plan that will persuade consumers as to why your business is good, and inform people of what your business has to offer. Having these skills is very useful for an entrepreneur.
I think I would be able to conduct primary research in my major. Conducting interviews, surveys and questionnaires are all primary research skills that I learned while taking this course so I am sure that I would be able to do it. I am open to learning any type of research method and would like to continue improving my skills so that I can be successful when I do conduct research. The kind of research that I see myself doing in future classes and my future career is conducting interviews and surveys.
My strengths and weaknesses regarding the project would be my writing skills as my strength and my analytical skill as my weakness. I was confident in my analytical skill as the course progressed but as I tried to analyze all the data I gathered I found it very difficult because of how much data there was and all the different patterns that just didn’t quite match up. Organizing my schedule and planning is an asset of mine, the problem is overcoming the feeling of laziness and procrastination which often makes it difficult to stick to those schedules and complete assignments on time.
Regarding my academic writing, I feel that it has significantly improved. I am now able to write more genres of writing and although analyzing is not my strong suit I can still very much analyze the data I need. I also found that after the activities and the constant writing practices during the course, I don’t find it difficult to write more than 5 pages worth of essays in a short time.
I feel that I spent enough time thinking of the research questions I asked and using the tools to collect data I need. The only thing I feel that I need to improve on is analyzing data because although it is easy for some topics that is not always the case.
