Reflection
In this course, I developed and enhanced many skills such as academic writing and quality research. This course went by so fast that it felt like it has only been a month or two! I had fun doing my research for the course. It was on childhood obesity. Here in the CNMI and actually all the other countries, we have so many people suffering with obesity. It’s quite sad too, that the children’s risk factor for obesity is influenced by their environment. Most especially their parents! This class gave me the opportunity to give an eye opening moment to few individuals about this worldwide epidemic. In this reflection, I would provide my experience, improvements, and thoughts about the course and my research.
I am really happy with the topic I chose for my research. I believe it is great and important topic considering the CNMI suffers greatly with obesity. I actually would continue the research because I found so much information and wish I had more to include. I also had fun doing my observations and interviews. Up until now, I am still observing people and don’t even realize it at the moment. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my topic! With the research outcomes, I feel like I could have done better. During the research, I kept getting feedback and realizing I could have put this question or removed that question in my survey. After my interviews, I started to tell myself that I should have asked for more information. My strengths were being able to observe because the places I was observing in, I would go almost every day. It was easy for me to start collecting data on my free time. My weakness, however, is scheduling time to write my essays.
Looking for and analyzing literature made this research successful. I believe doing so, gave me more knowledge and ideas of what to do further along the research. I would definitely use this skill for my future assignments and career. I liked how I started to find my literature sources at the beginning of the semester to the end. I prefer that rather than finding them on the last four weeks of the semester. It was a way to determine which would best fit my research and what does not in a matter of time. I believe it gave me the opportunity to get the best results. I am pretty satisfied with what I was able to find. The problem I encountered was finding a topic that had a good amount of sources online that were able to be found on EBSCOhost. Both academic and non-academic sources were helpful to me because the news articles on Saipan Tribune related well with the CNMI and the academic literature sources were perfect for general data and case studies. I prefer the courses essay methods that were used in this class. For instance, when I wrote my four essays that were required for the course it at the same time built my final research paper. I found it more convenient.
Overall, I think I achieved all the requirements for this course. I would say that I would most definitely need the skills developed in the course for my future courses and career. I want to be a psychiatrist so I probably would be doing a lot of writing and researching. I am thankful for all the skills I learned in this course. I would say I did improve my academic writing. The only problem was that, I would do it so last minute and that led to less time proof reading it or asking for feedback. I would think doing it last minute was the only thing that would mess me up in regards to academic writing. I wouldn’t get many requirements written down. However, I would say improvements were made. I actually improved on not making my sentences too wordy. I feel like I should start writing straight forward. I found the power points, web documents, and supplementary handouts a very helpful guide in learning about academic writing. As for academic research, I preferred audio materials and power points. This class was fun and a great experience!
