Reflection
In the beginning of the course, each individual student was assigned to compose a final research project that would be completed within the time frame of a 14-week period. Despite the actual length of a research project and time needed to compose it, the topic of which is chosen by the researcher must not only be interesting, but relevant to the researcher as well. Apace with that, the topic must also be workable to sustain itself through several vigorous pages of writing. I choose a rather current topic which was whether or not the current implementation of austerity will be successful in terms of alleviating the CNMI government’s financial deficit; a topic I’d advise no else to do unless they have the mental capacity for it. Although my topic was maintainable, I found it rather troublesome to establish a rather definitive answer to my primary research question with the results I obtained from my surveys. With only 28 respondents, such a number is nowhere near 1% of the island population. For this specific topic, at the very least 10% or more of the island’s population is needed to be surveyed; majority of responses needing to come from government workers who are experiencing austerity first-hand. In this essay, I will reflect on all things that I have completed for the research paper, things I would have done differently, and how this college course has helped me improved my composition skills.
The essays, which were set for this class, were organized in a way so that each essay would compose a piece of the student’s final research report. In all honesty, this method is rather appropriate as it relieves students of needing to compose a final research from scratch. Some instructors find it wise to assign essays that have nothing to do with a research paper and then require a complete research paper to be composed within four weeks, from scratch might I add. I prefer the way in which the assignments were set up and that each essay was essentially a part of my final research paper. It minimized the numbers hours need to otherwise compose a research paper from scratch. Fortunately, simply copying and pasting pieces from previous essays, while also redrafting several sentences aided me in constructing the final research project.
One essay required for the course included a literature review. This specific essay delved into the various kinds of literature(s) which the student researcher discovered on their topic. The prior objective was that students (as soon as possible) research and uncover literature pertaining to their topic. This would then allow students to read, analyze, and weigh out the information they found. I found that the more time given to the students to complete the set essay, the better the analysis will be. In actuality, I was satisfied with the sources I uncovered. Majorly, the literature I found were academic, international sources that empahsized the great impacts of austerity in communities within Great Britain. Alongside that, non-academic, local literature was also uncovered to better illustrate the financial step in the CNMI. Despite finding literature deriving from the CNMI, specific aspects such as funds being saved and the officials responsible for those funds were not available. Luckily, the international literature I found was entirely relevant to the austerity matter in the CNMI. Each article emphasized the impact of austerity on certain aspect of the community such as education, public services (transportation), the healthcare system, as well as the business community. Getting a good hold on the analyzation of literature is rather crucial as it will aid me in the future as I plan to pursue a degree in the English and Humanities program.
This course has taught me a tremendous amount and will possibly aid me in constructing set requirements for the essays I plan to set for my class. The composition skills learned in this class are quintessential, especially for courses within the science, history, humanities category. Conducting primary research is the one thing that sets this class apart from EN101. Unfortunately, due to supertyphoon Yutu, I was not able to conduct primary research due to the shortened semester. Therefore, conducting primary research was rather difficult as I had no practice nor knowledge on how to procure such information. Another form of primary research, which was utilized to collect information, is the distribution of letters to experts both on and off island. Learning how to do primary research will help me, especially if I carry out a career in the English and Humanities category. My collection of primary data is the strongest as well as the weakest part of my research paper. Although I had useful and helpful responses from 28 respondents, I feel as though the results cannot be fully conclusive as I only surveyed such a small portion of the population on Saipan. Moreover, though it was easy to report the findings I received for my report, it was a lot harder to explain the significance of them in the discussion section for the essay. I really appreciate how the research essay was given to students since the beginning of the course, as it allows them to work on and plan ahead for their research paper.
All in all, I feel as though this course has really helped me improve my academic
writing skills even further. Additionally, the course has helped practice how to properly evaluate literature sources, as I used to once simply take and slap quotes from the sources, now I weigh out the cruciality of a course before adding it to my final report. The main and true reason as to why I chose this topic was due to the fact of how many people were affected by it. Teachers, government employees, students, the business community were all affected by this measure. As an aspiring educator, the austerity measure has somewhat deterred me from returning and teaching here; however, knowing the quality of teaching we have on island drives me to return. Anyway, knowing that the number of surveys were insufficient and that my answers were rather inconclusive, I regret not having sent our both my letters and surveys much earlier. Despite this, the course was useful and will most likely be useful for me in the future.
