Reflection
My research projected consisted of several different strategies to collect data and information on the rising issue of birth tourism in the CNMI. Research data was collected through reviewing literature, developing a survey, conducting interviews, and sending letters to experts. The research took a total of 15 weeks to complete, with the outcome of more gained knowledge than when I first started on this research topic. The research was conducted to find answers to how birth tourism has affected the CNMI over the last couple of years, whether people support the issue or not, and the increase/decrease within statistics involving tourists, more so pregnant female tourists.
I believe I chose a good topic because I was able to gain a lot of new knowledge regarding this issue. I know much more about birth tourism, especially here in the CNMI, than I initially knew. I would definitely work towards this issue further if got familiar with a bigger amount of people well-involved with birth tourism here in our islands. This research project allowed me to learn new things and step out of my comfort zones in order to obtain the information that I needed. Conducting surveys and interviews enhanced my ability to be more open and talk with people that I've just met in that moment.
Alongside the research project, I believe that the writing portion dedicated towards class assignments really helped me improve on my writing. The several given lessons and lectures about APA formatting and subjects related to essay writing, was beneficial towards all my submitted essays, and especially my final research report. Other subjects we covered included, properly finding and locating literature sources, analyzing literature, and doing primary research.
I feel that I spent enough time thinking of my research questions and tools that I used to collect data. Perhaps I could have interviewed more individuals, but the information I was able to obtain still gave me great answers. I am very happy with the outcome of this research project. I would definitely suggest to peers and other people that birth tourism is something to be interested in, especially for our islands and the opportunities there is available to people in the CNMI. I was not aware of how big of an issue birth tourism would or could be up until I was mid-way with collecting data. Overall, I am content with the topic I chose for this research project.
