THE ORIGINAL PLAN

The seeds I will be planting will be for watermelon (Sweet Beauty), tree wisteria, canteloupe, spinach mustard, dill, and sunflowers.
They will go into numerous different planters in different areas of my yard for a variety of sunlight intensities.
My Schedule:
Due to Typhoon Chan-Hom, I will not plant the seeds until Monday, July 6th.
The project will end on Wednesday, August 5th.
During the project I will water and manage the seeds daily. I will also take photos of them everyday, and will upload them as a gallery below every weekend.
Depending on the results of the project (how well the plants grow and other factors), I will end it with planting the results in a plot in the ground.
Also, every weekend I will post information on one or two of the plants I will planting. The aim of this project is to learn more about these plants, gardening in general, and to apply my knowledge in real life by growing these plants.

WHAT HAPPENED
A series of bad typhoons hit Saipan, which you probably already know. Due to this, I wasn't able to update this page, and furthermore, my garden was signifigantly hurt by the weather. Additionally, I ended up not planting sunflowers because of a lack of space to place them in, which only became apparent a while into the project. Therefore, the new format for this project will be a collection of information, pictures, and stories, all adding up to my thirty day challenge.
HOW MY 30 DAY PROJECT WENT
THE FIFTH STAGE (Saturday, July 25th- Saturday, August 1st): During this week I did a lot of weed pulling and caretaking. I cleaned up the plot outside and got rid of stray grass that hadn't been thrown aside when I built it. I also went and watered all the plants daily, or as needed. I moved the salsa garden outside because it wasn't getting enough sun, and as a side note, my mother's cilantro died. During this point of the project, and previously, I was going to be doing research, which I would present as part of my project. Sadly, the internet issues the island faced after an underwater fibre cable was broken made this impossible. I did try and go to NMC's library, but they had insufficient information available on the subject matter (plants, gardening). The picture to the right is of the watering spray bottle I used to water the plants so I could measure how much water they recieved. Overwatering plants WILL kill them. Also, the watermelon popped up out of the ground that week, which makes sense since they were the first I planted. A picture of the watermelon is also on the right.
THE SIXTH STAGE (Sunday, August 2nd - Wednesday, August 5th): This was supposed to be the end of my project, but instead Saipan was hit by Typhoon Soudelor. Everything in my garden was destroyed, except for the watermelon, honeydew, squash, and the orchid inside my house. |
