Summary:
In a futuristic era in Chicago, the whole community is divided into five factions. Factions of which they have their own particular virtues and aspects in life. They are Dauntless the brave, Erudite the intelligent, Amity the peaceful, Candor the honest, and Abnegation the selfless. Beatrice Prior, the main character, is in the Abnegation faction and was soon given the opportunity to change that. On the Choosing Ceremony, which is conducted every year for those who are above sixteen, must choose one of the five factions and Beatrice was stuck between what she wanted and what she needed. She wanted to choose what was best for her without having to feel selfless towards her parents and everyone watching her. She knew what she had to do and chose Dauntless; hoping her parents would understand. In Dauntless, she was given the option to keep her name or change it. And she did, she changed her name to Tris. Her journey in the Dauntless faction was not easy considering they had initiation every now and then and were ranked by their abilities. The lower you rank, the higher chance you’ll be kicked out and sent to the Factionless. Beatrice had something special inside her that only a very few of the people in all five factions have. She was Divergent. Divergent simply means different and in this book, it means death. Well, only if they find out. Beatrice tries to keep her identity a secret until she found someone who she can trust and that was Tobias, who soon became her boyfriend. As days went on, things started to get out of hand and the factions were about to fall apart. Jeanine Matthews, the most intelligent woman in all factions, started rivalry towards the city council in Abnegation and Andrew Prior, Tris’s dad, was one of the council members. Jeanine didn’t use tanks or the S.W.A.T team to start a war, she used people. Specifically from the Dauntless. She made a serum and forced the Dauntless leaders to inject each and every one of the Dauntless. Lucky for Tris and Tobias, they were Divergent and were immune to the serum. They knew they had to go against Jeanine’s plan and destroy the serum. They went through so many obstacles to go back to the Dauntless headquarters and destroy the serum before there weren’t any more Abnegation people. After Tris and Tobias destroyed it, Jeanine had already wrecked the Abnegation sector and there were only a few people left. Tris and Tobias soon got their friends and escaped Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless since they were all taken over by Jeanine. They escaped to Candor and started their journey from there, starting the next book, Insurgent.
About the Author:
Veronica Roth is a novelist and a short story writer who was born and raised in New York City. She is famously known for her New York Times Bestselling set of novels called Divergent trilogy (Divergent, Insurgent, Allegiant) and Four: A Divergent Collection. Divergent became the winner for Best Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction of 2011 and 2012 of the Goodreads Choice Award. She sold the film rights of her Divergent trilogy to Summit Entertainment and has already made films for Divergent and Insurgent which were released in 2014 and 2015. Summit Entertainment is currently working on her third book of the trilogy, Allegiant, and will be released in 2016. Roth was inspired by many things before starting on her novels and believed that she wasn’t just inspired by one thing. According to her blog, she talked about a few of where she got her inspiration from and she talked about her Psychology class, a song she heard on the radio, and her interest in the division into groups.
Authors Purpose:
I think Veronica Roth’s purpose for writing the Divergent trilogy was to show readers how being separated into different groups could get out of hand. It’ll make some people use force to get other people into the same group as them. It’s like forcing someone to be something they’re not. For example, in Divergent, Jeanine Matthews wanted to destroy the Abnegation faction maybe because she wanted them to join her faction, Erudite.

Cinderella
By: Brothers Grimm

Summary:
In a fairy tale book I’ve read to my kids before, I came across a story about a girl named Cinderella and it became the most memorable one out of all. Cinderella lived a very happy childhood until her mother passed away and was left with her father. After mourning on her death, Cinderella’s father announced that he was going to marry again so that she could have a mother and two sisters to go along with. Tragically, not long after the marriage, her father died leaving her alone with her stepmother and stepsisters. All three of them took advantage of Cinderella and made her their maid until something really special happened. One night, a King wanted to celebrate his son’s birthday but also used that chance to have his son finally look for a girl to marry, so he invited all the eligible maidens in town. While her stepmother got the invitation from the messenger, she read it aloud so they all could hear. Cinderella overheard their conversation and was excited to go because she was also an eligible maiden. Unlucky for her, her stepmother and stepsisters refused to bring her along with them. Cinderella was taught by her mother to always be kind, so she let them leave without her. While they left to go to the ball, she ran outside crying until she heard her fairy godmother. Her fairy godmother told her that she could go to the ball but the question was how could she? She didn’t have a carriage to take her there or a dress and shoes that she could wear. But her fairy godmother made it all possible. As good as they came; of course they didn’t last forever. She was told that she needed to be home by midnight or the spell would be broken. She met up with her prince at the ball and danced until the clock struck midnight; she was off running for her life until her shoe fell off at the fleet of stairs. The prince came running after her but it was far too late, Cinderella was already on her way home. He found her glass slipper and immediately conducted a search the next day. He needed to find the girl who could fit the glass slipper perfectly. After giving the maidens of the town another chance to be with the prince, they all couldn’t fit the glass slipper. When they finally reached Cinderella’s house, her stepmother had already locked her away and had her own daughters try on the glass slipper. Luckily for Cinderella, she had help from her friends and the Prince didn’t leave after every girl in their household had tried on the glass slipper. And then finally, it was a perfect fit. Cinderella was finally a princess and was no longer a maid to her stepmother and stepsisters. She lived happily ever after with the Prince.
About the Author:
Both authors, Jacob and Wilhelm, spent most of their years in the German town of Hanau. They went through a tough childhood after their father’s dead but were soon able to attend the University of Marburg. There, they developed a liking to German folklore which made them start writing folk tales of their own. Many of their short stories were later adapted by filmmakers such as Walt Disney and Lotte Reiniger, which made Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Sleeping Beauty well known.
Authors Purpose:
I think Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s (Brothers Grimm) purpose for writing this short story was to show readers that if you be kind to everyone, you’ll get something good in return. Cinderella has always understood the things happening in her life and went along with it. Even though her parents died at a very young age and her new family treated her badly all the time, she still had a good heart. In return, she lived happily ever after with a Prince.
