Reflection
The focus of my study was to investigate how NMC’s School of Business graduates are being placed in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands labor field. The reason behind this study was to gather comprehensive information in order to help those currently pursuing a Business major and those who are planning to pursue one, so that they may have a grasp on what to expect after getting a business degree at NMC.
I started my study in August 2018, and the deadline for the result was supposed to be in December 2018. However, my research project was postponed to March 2019, due the impact of Typhoon Yutu on Saipan. As a result, I had difficulties reaching experts on island. This was the only part that did not work well in terms of comparing data quality. As a visual learner, the examples and visual aids provided by Mrs. Anderson, my instructor, was very helpful in the process of completing this research project. Also, being organized and having all my notes was important to succeed in this course. It can sometimes be overwhelming to keep track of all the due assignments.
My weakness for this class was my writing skills. However, with the guidance of my instructor and the practice that I have had in writing different essays throughout this semester, I have seen improvement. And although there is room for much more betterment, I can write an essay now, as well as correcting most of my mistakes. The requirement for this class was to locate and learn the use of academic and non- academic resources. The campus library and the internet were a great source of information. The class textbook “The curious Researcher” was not of much help compared to other sources available. Aside from improving my writing skills, I learned to cite research according to APA standards and to use quotations properly in the contents of my research paper.
Although Yutu made it challenging to accomplish what I had planned at the beginning of this class, being organized has helped me a lot to finish my project. I was able to collect and analyze data from the pilot survey conducted with NMC students. On October 2018, I conducted an interview though email with an expert off island based in Texas. On March 2019, I did my last interview with a student majoring in Business Management at NMC. To conclude, I wish I had more time to interview experts on island and students who have already majored in Business study. I feel it lacks information when it comes to comparing different opinions. Overall, I am happy with the final result, and really enjoyed being in the class.
