Reflection: Introduction Speech
This was the first time I purposely made a video of myself talking. After reviewing the footage, some negative critiques that come to mind is the fact that I seemed to be rushing through my speech as if I was in a hurry. I also felt this way while I was doing the video. I felt that I was just hurriedly going from point to point, and not really conveying what I intended to. I also felt that the tones I was using throughout the speech was off and unnatural. I was forcing my voice to the correct tone and pitch, which made it sound unnatural to me. Although it was a close-up of my face, I saw that I looked unsure on what facial expression to use and at which time to use it. I also sounded monotone and unenthusiastic. Despite all this, I did see some elements that I liked.
I felt that I covered pretty much what I wanted to in my speech to introduce myself. I stuck with the structure I created: start with my origin, move to the present, and then to what I looked for in the future. I also liked the volume and clarity of my voice. I believe that whom ever watches it would not have a problem understanding my speech. I also noticed that I avoided any stuttering or any confusion when it came to the speech itself. I also kept pauses short and at a minimal. The most difficult part was keeping from sounding out of breath. I noticed I sounded like I was rushing, but I didn’t let it affect my voice. ![]()

Goals for the Semester

Reflection: Goals
I have done public speaking before and one of the problems I had was speaking to fast. Its due to having a short time limit or just being nervous. One technique I learned this past semester is to enunciate my words. If you put emphasis on sounding out the words as you give a speech, it really helps in pacing. It allows you to slow down and to really think about what you are saying. Most of the time I just spill the words out like I’m in a rush, but if really take the time to sound the words, it really slows down your speech and also allows your audience to really understand what you are saying. Another technique is to add pauses at the proper times. This could add emphasis to something you say or it could allow you to adjust yourself and prepare for what’s coming next. I did this during my demonstration speech and it really helped. Public speaking doesn’t just end with the semester. I plan on doing more public speeches in the future. It could be to a group of two or an audience of a hundred, but I plan on refusing to shy away from any chance that allows me to speak to people. Practice makes perfect and the more you do something the easier and more comfortable it gets. |
