Self Evaluation of my Introduction Video
This was my first experience filming myself on camera, so I was extremely nervous and my posture looks a little stiff and tense. The first thing I noticed was the frequent usage of filler words while speaking, such as "uhm," "uhh," "yeah" and "like." Before filming I wrote down pointers of what to say, but once I start filming, I forgot almost half of the items on my list I wanted to talk about, which also resulted to having a lot of long pauses during my speech. I also have a habit of laughing when I get nervous, so I hope to be able to control that too. I want to be able to manage my nervousness, so it will not reflect on my public speaking.
Goals for the Course
As mentioned in the video, my goal is to be able to speak confidently in front of people. I would like to be able to control my composure and be poised while speaking in front of my audience. I want to be able to prepare all my materials carefully to be fully knowledgeable about my subject, so I can deliver my message precisely. I would also like to learn how to incorporate gestures and humors in my speech to connect with my audience. Through practice, I want to gain more confidence and acquire experience so that I can be more used to public speaking and know what to expect.
Demonstration Video
Introduction:
Hafa Adai, everyone! My name is Youki Kishimoto and I am currently in a long distance relationship. Have you ever wondered how couples in long distance relationships keep their life interesting? This is something that never really crossed my mind until I got myself into one. Since long distance couples are far apart and limited with what they can do besides phone calls, emails, or sending text messages, I was wondering what they do to keep their relationship going.
If you search online, you can actually find a couple of interesting activities you can do with your partner. Today, we are blessed with devices like smartphones, tablets, and cool apps that can help us accomplish normalizing many things. My partner and I both love to eat, so for my demonstration speech, I will be demonstrating how to plan a virtual dinner date. Now, this can be useful not only with your significant other, but also with a friend or family who’s living far away, or even with those that are here but prefer not to go out due to social distancing.
Today, I would like to go over how to set up a virtual date in four easy steps. I know that this may sound a little difficult if you have a time difference, but having a virtual date together can actually be really fun. You can make it feel more like an actual date with details like eating the same meal or cooking a meal together over a video chat, or you can also change the scenery by having your meal outdoors instead of calling from your dining room. I will be introducing the steps in the following video.

Memorized Skit Speech
Speech Topic: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney)
Introduce yourself (Attention grabber): Hello, my name is Youki and I will be acting out the scene from the 1937’s Disney film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs where Snow White finds the house of seven dwarfs and where she meets them.
Start with why: Although Snow White is not really my favorite princess, I used to watch this film quite often when I was young. I think a lot of people argue that Snow White is not a very strong or bright princess but after watching the film again as an adult, I have a different perspective of her. I have read somewhere that Snow White was only 14 years old in the film. She was almost murdered, she gets lost in a forest terrified and when she finds shelter, she basically makes a bargain with the dwarfs by asking them to keep her whereabouts secret and she’ll cook and clean for them. She was a 14 year old who handled the situation with fierce independence.
Community Issues Speech:
COVID-19's Effect on CNMI Tourism Economy
Community Issues Speech: COVID-19's Effect on CNMI Tourism Economy
Introduce yourself (Attention grabber): I will share a short story to grab the attention and introduce myself and what I do to connect to why I selected this topic.
Start with why: I will explain the sudden changes that were brought up to our island due to the COVID-19, about the shut-down and the guidelines that we were to follow, and why this has been an issue.
Give a brief overview of the entire process (How is it organized?):
I based my research on two questions. First question is, “how should we adjust the protection from COVID-19 in the form of social distancing and quarantine orders with the need to reopen our tourism economy?” and the second question is, “should we still consider reopening the flights?”
Go through the steps, one-by-one
(How will you maintain their attention? For each, describe it, then show it):
(Optional) Discuss options, extras for variations (When/how will you be testing for understanding?):
Share photos of some events which we were able to successfully accomplish even during the pandemic.
Summarize what was done. End with a memorable tagline:
The CNMI’s economy relies heavily on tourism and the effects of COVID-19 is bringing a huge economic crisis. What we can do now is to continue to follow the guidelines, prepare, and help stop the virus from spreading! Before I end my speech, I will share another short story.

(How will you maintain their attention? For each, describe it, then show it):
- I want to share with my audience why the pandemic has brought risk to our tourism economy. I will explain the cause and effect based on the research (sources: news articles, Saipan Chamber of Commerce, Governor’s Office, etc.).
- I will talk about the current numbers of positive cases that were detected and whether it is safe to reopen the flights again. I’ve included interviews from the mayor and his special assistant and their thoughts on the situation.
- The challenges CNMI has faced and what we can do to help minimize the spread of the virus and how we can lift the restrictions.

Favorite Speech of the Course and Short Reflection
Short Reflection
Whether or not I have achieved my goals for the class and also how I plan to continue developing my speaking skills in the future.
I have been avoiding to take this class for a really long time because of my fear of public speaking. I kept on pushing it back until the day finally came, where I couldn't run away anymore because speech class was a prerequisite for two of my classes. I was very anxious because I am truly terrified of speaking in front of a group of people that I don't know. In the beginning of the course, I stated that my goal was to be able to speak confidently in front of people, be able to control my composure and be poised while speaking in front of my audience.
Since the classes are all done online due to the COVID-19 situation, everything was done virtually and video recording for speech. At first, for a very shy person like me I thought it was a dream come true, but that idea changed over time. On the last session with my tutor, he told me that it is actually more nerve wrecking reading your speech in front of camera than performing it in front of the audience. When you're in front of the camera, it's just you and yourself, but with the audience you will get to see their reactions and that is the best part when giving a speech.
I haven't achieved my goal not quite yet, but I definitely feel like I picked up the important keys to remember to give a successful speech. As I mentioned in my "favorite speech" video, I never in my life thought I'd volunteer myself to read a speech in front of the governor, congressmen, congresswomen, directors and executives of various agencies! I have always been on the backstage. My role is to prepare the speech but not read it. It wasn't my first time having to stand on a stage and give a speech in front of the government officials, but I will never volunteer to do it unless I have to (just so I won't get fired or fail in class)! I was able to push myself to go up on the stage that day because I felt more confident than before. Next time, I would like to have the chance to read my own speech that I wrote.
I plan to continue to practice and be more assertive. I will try my best to step out of my comfort zone and take every opportunity I am given when it comes to public speaking. I will keep all the important keys I learned in class and make sure to use them every time I give a speech.
