Alice in Wonderland is a novel written by Lewis Carroll. The protagonist in the novel is a little girl named Alice, who fell into Wonderland. Alice enters wonderland, and she encounters talking animals. Alice also goes through the change of size, for the desire of entering a door that leads to a garden. Alice encounters the mad hatter, a dormouse, and hare having tea time. She realizes that it is always tea time, for they are stuck in the same hour. Alice explores more; next, she is playing a game of croquet with the queen of hearts. She also witnesses the Cheshire Cat whom she saw earlier in the story. The queen of hearts ordered Alice to listen to the story of the Mock Turtle. They undergo a trial, it was about the Knave of Hearts stealing from the queen.
The main characters in the story are Alice, a girl who is curious about the things that surround her. The rabbit, Alice's guide in Wonderland. The Queen of Hearts, the mad queen of Wonderland, who will behead anyone who gets in her way. The Cheshire Cat, who appears and reappears at any given time and depicts that everyone in wonderland are mad. The setting of the novel is in our world, and Alice's dream world where everything is fictional; Wonderland.
Lewis Carroll was an author of children's classics. He was born on January 27th, 1832 in England. As a child, Lewis was intelligent in mathematics. He was also a photographer, who wrote essays, pamphlets, and poetry. Carroll's death was caused by an influenza, which led to pneumonia. He died on January 14, 1898.
Based on a paragraph I read online, the purpose of the author were the aspects of his life being an influence to his writing. These characteristics are his interest in photography of little girls, dual personality, Victorian lifestyle, sleeping difficulties, and neglected childhood. It also states that he has interest in chess and croquet. Therefore, Alice in Wonderland reflects Carroll as a person.
Character Map : Alice went through a character change. She was a curious little girl when she entered Wonderland. Alice thought that the place was quite odd. Alice stated that the animals were "a queer-looking party that assembled in the bank."(page 3) Alice's change of size frustrated her. The innocent little girl was confused. The story stated, "she sat down and began to cry again." (page 2) In the end, Alice grew a sense of responsibility. She became reasonable. Alice was growing up. Alice stated, "I can't help it...i'm growing."(page 11). The Queen of Hearts demanded to behead her, for Alice stood up for herself by saying "stuff and nonsense...I won't" (page 12) Alice went from a curious little girl to an aware and reasonable young lady.
